The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) was founded 75 years ago, September 1945. At the time, the massive post-war rebuilding effort by the major powers was undertaken with growing recognition of the need to manufacture products to a common and agreed set of standards. Standardisation facilitated and enhanced international trade, offering objective benchmarks to ensure minimum safety and performance integrity of products, and improve applicability across a range of national markets.

SABS was established as South Africa's national standardisation body and was soon playing a valuable role in the country's development.

Notes: Part 1: Safety requirements Applies to the safety of electrical and electronic equipment within the field of audio, video, information and communication technology, and business and office machines with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V.
Harmonizing standards: · Merging of Standards DIN EN 62368-1:2016-05: Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment - Part 1: Safety requirements (IEC 62368-1:2014, modified + Cor.:2015); German version EN 62368-1:2014 + AC:2015 EN 62368-1:2020: Manufacturers of audio/video (A/V), information technology (IT) and communication technology products need to know that CENELEC has accepted a new standard IEC 62368-1 as a mandatory requirement for CE marking of low-voltage equipment sold in the European Union (EU). IEC 62368-1 will replace two standards currently in use – EN 60065 for A/V and EN 60950-1 for IT and communication technology equipment – and will apply to new and existing products. Additionally, the U.S. and Canada adapted a national version of the IEC 62368-1 standard titled CSA/UL 62368-1. The American and European bodies have harmonized the date from which the 60950-1 and 60065 standards will cease and 62368-1 will take over. Following a recent update to the EU’s Official Journal (OJ) of legislation, and subsequent announcement by UL in the USA, the new date is December 20, 2020. GB 4943.1-2011: Power Supply Adaptor certifications Medical and ITE power supplies China CCC certificates have been updated to comply with the latest revision of the standard GB 4943.1-2011 effective December 1, 2012. The CCC GB4943.1-2011 certification is required for power supplies used in or shipped to China. IEC 60065:2014: Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus - Safety requirements IEC 60065:2014 applies to electronic apparatus designed to be fed from the mains, from a supply apparatus, from batteries or from remote power feeding and intended for reception, generation, recording or reproduction of audio, video and associated signals. It also applies to apparatus designed to be used exclusively in combination with the above-mentioned apparatus. This standard primarily concerns apparatus intended for household and similar general use but which may also be used in places of public assembly such as schools, theatres, places of worship and the workplace professional apparatus intended for use as described above is also covered unless falling specifically within the scope of other standards. This standard: - concerns only safety aspects of the above apparatus; The American and European bodies have harmonized the date from which the 60950-1 and 60065 standards will cease and 62368-1 will take over. This standard does not include requirements for performance or functional characteristics of equipment. Examples of equipment within the scope of this standard are given in Annex A. A rated voltage of 600 V is considered to include equipment rated at 400/690 V. This part of IEC 62368 is also applicable to: components and subassemblies intended for incorporation in this equipment. Such components and subassemblies need not comply with every requirement of the standard, provided that the complete equipment, incorporating such components and subassemblies, does comply; external power supply units intended to supply other equipment within the scope of this part of IEC 62368 and accessories intended to be used with equipment within the scope of this part of IEC 62368. This part of IEC 62368 does not apply to power supply systems which are not an integral part of the equipment, such as motor-generator sets, battery backup systems and distribution transformers. This part of IEC 62328 specifies safeguards for ordinary persons, instructed persons, and skilled persons. Additional requirements may apply for equipment that is clearly designed or intended for use by children or specifically attractive to children. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010. It constitutes a technical revision.
