Design Techniques for the 21st Century – Behind the Scenes Make Sure You Use the Correct Capacitor

PSMA and IEEE PELS Sponsor 2021 Pre-APEC Capacitors in Power Electronics Workshop

The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) and the IEEE Power Electronics Society (IEEE PELS) will jointly sponsor a capacitor workshop titled "Design Techniques for the 21st Century – Behind the Scenes Make Sure You Use the Correct Capacitor." This Capacitor Workshop is being planned as an in-person event in parallel with a Magnetics Workshop on the Saturday prior to APEC. Given the unknowns surrounding the future of the Pandemic and travel restrictions, we are structuring the event in such a manner that we will be able to easily transition the in-person workshop to a virtual event. For those of you that were part of the 2020 virtual workshop, you know how enormously successful this event was. The Workshop was broken into three Webinars with open discussions and demonstrations included. The presenters originally scheduled for the in-person workshop presented at the online sessions and ensured that every question was answered. Anyone who registered was invited to attend both the Capacitor and MagneticsWorkshops and has access on the PSMA website to all of the workshop presentations and webinar recordings.

The 2021 Capacitor Workshop will be the 4th of its kind and we are excited to bring to you once again a robust mix of new technology, research, design trends, evolving applications and much more. With the growing interest and excellent feedback from former attendees, we know that the past workshops have provided valuable information and insights to attendees and also which areas of Capacitor technology to focus on in the future. The upcoming workshop will do just that: highlight interesting and trending topics in the use of capacitors, current and future technologies, with a focus on trending applications. At this time, we are pleased to announce an incredible mix of professionals from industry leading capacitor manufacturers including KEMET, CDE, TDK & Wurth Electronics as well as experts from universities around the world. As a brief outline, below are some of the primary subjects that we will be including in the 2021 workshop:

  • DC Link Focus – Pros and Cons of using different capacitor types focusing on reliability, voltage limits, and more
  • Evolving New Technology – High Voltage Polymers, High Temp Supercaps, Ceramics, and more
  • Characterization of Capacitors – Simulation Tools, Comparing simulation to reality, and more
  • Environmental Influences – Behavior of caps under various extreme conditions: Temperature, Pressure, Humidity, Mechanical Load, and more
  • Measurements – Interpretation of datasheets, measuring electric cap values, and more

In 2021 we will also continue the very successful and highly appreciated interactive session of tabletop technology demonstrations. These demonstration stations will be available during the breakfast prior to the opening session, lunch, and the networking session at the end of the day's events. Meet the presenters and professionals directly and get in-touch with the various technologies and their advantages. The demonstrations from both the Capacitor Workshop and the Power Magnetics @ High Frequency Workshop that is scheduled in parallel will be in the same room, allowing attendees of both workshops to benefit from all of the displays.

We look forward to your participation. More details regarding the agenda for the workshop as well as registration for the workshop will become available on the PSMA website (www.psma.com/technical-forums/capacitor/workshop) over the coming months.
